In MB, water demand in agriculture has increased by 50.12% between 2010 and 2018, with projections indicating a further expansion of irrigated croplands by 2030. The study aims to model the water footprint and scarcity simultaneously at farm-to-watershed scales, considering the increasing water demands in agriculture and sectors like beef production, pasture, and the food industry, which play crucial roles in MB's economy. To address the need for accurate and timely data, the project proposes leveraging geospatial data analytics, remote sensing technologies, AI, big data, and cloud computing. These technologies will enable the development of a water footprint index specific to MB's agricultural lands, allowing for mapping and assessing spatiotemporal dynamics of water availability and usage. The main objectives and cotents are: (1) To develop a novel green water footprint index (WIFP) using an integration method between light detection and ranging radar (LiDAR) and synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) spaceborne technology; (2) To incorporate cutting-edge science in AI modeling and big data to establish a dynamic web-based application in water footprint in agriculture for Manitoba; (3) To assess the accuracy and sensitivity of the WIFP predictions and dynamics using high-performance computing (HPC) and cloud computing; (4) To provide MB’s decision-makers with a reliable tool.
